New crosswalks this fall

Five new crosswalks are being installed this fall by SDOT including the new crosswalk in Phinney Ridge that we linked to a few weeks ago.

SDOT crews are preparing to mark three new crosswalks on Roosevelt Way NE between NE 90th Street and NE 97th Street. These new crossing will improve pedestrian mobility between the shops, restaurants, and transit stops in this neighborhood commercial area. The new crosswalks will be installed on Roosevelt Way NE at NE 90th Street, NE 92nd Street, and NE 97th Street.

Another marked crossing will soon be installed at the intersection of Hillside Drive E and Lake Washington Boulevard E in the Denny-Blaine neighborhood. This crossing will enhance Lakeview Park which is bisected by Lake Washington Boulevard. The new crossing will link the forested trails on the west side of the street with the sweeping Lake Washington and Cascade Mountain Range views on the east.

All five of these new crosswalks have one thing in common – they were requested by residents. Do you know a great location that should be considered for a new marked crosswalk? If so, drop us a line at walkandbike@seattle.gov and we’ll check it out.

Greenwood Ave improvements

Visit SDOT’s blog to see photos of the new road striping on Greenwood Ave.

This project, which is consistent with the Greenwood Neighborhood Plan, enhances access to businesses, improves pedestrian safety, maintains transit efficiency, and provides bicycle facilities while reducing vehicle speeds and maintaining vehicle carrying capacity.

Crews changed the number of travel lanes to one lane in each direction, extended turn pockets at the intersection of Greenwood and N 85th St, installed a new center turn lane, and added bicycle lanes in both directions.

Madrona sidewalk maintenance in progress

Central District News reports that Liz Ellis of SDOT is planning sidewalk improvements in the Madrona area.

Ellis identified three specific arterials in Madrona as the most in need of repair – E. Union Street from MLK to 34th Avenue, E. Cherry Street from MLK to 34th Avenue and 34th Avenue between E. Cherry and E. Pike.
She’s meeting with a crew chief to discuss plans for repairs on E. Union St. as early as this month or in the first few weeks of November, to take advantage of good weather. That street was prioritized because it’s nearest to Madrona K-8 and sees a lot of foot traffic, both from school and from the bus stops. The repairs would include taking up lifted cracks, root pruning and putting in level asphalt patches.

Update: The sidewalk restoration has begun

Lights on 20th Ave over Ravenna Park

With the days getting shorter, many of us will soon be doing more walking in the dark. While there are many places in the city that need better lighting, there is now one fewer.

20th Ave NE over Ravenna Park has been closed to cars for decades, and while the old street light poles were still in place, they hadn’t been in use until recently. Just last week, those old light poles were retrofitted with modern LEDs to keep this pedestrian right-of-way lit after dark. Now people passing through here after sunset can feel a little safer.
