Greenwood alley makeover tomorrow

Tired of potholes in your alley? Check out this do-it-yourself project these Greenwood residents are doing (via Feet First):

Thirteen Greenwood neighbors in Seattle are giving their alley a makeover. After only 3 months of conversation (not a whole lot of process in Seattle terms), these neighbors have come together with $450 ($35 each) to pour crushed rock along the alley between 95th and 97th in the Seattle Greenwood neighborhood.

The folks in this neighborhood knew it would probably be many years before the city would fix the potholes and the puddles of water that accumulate during a rainfall, so they decided to take matters into their own hands. And, without a large transportation budget, they are making it a lot easier for people to use this public right of way.

On Saturday, May 14th at 12pm at the alley at 95th and 97th between Phinney and Dayton, residents are coming together to spread the crushed rock along their alley. Alleys are gaining popularity as their appearance–narrow spaces that move people, create connections, which inspire a new way for people to see their neighborhood. Come out and learn about this neighborhood’s DIY transportation improvement that will inspire you to do some street repair in your neighborhood!

Greenwood Ave improvements

Visit SDOT’s blog to see photos of the new road striping on Greenwood Ave.

This project, which is consistent with the Greenwood Neighborhood Plan, enhances access to businesses, improves pedestrian safety, maintains transit efficiency, and provides bicycle facilities while reducing vehicle speeds and maintaining vehicle carrying capacity.

Crews changed the number of travel lanes to one lane in each direction, extended turn pockets at the intersection of Greenwood and N 85th St, installed a new center turn lane, and added bicycle lanes in both directions.

Greenwood Avenue re-channelization

Another road will be re-striped to improve pedestrian safety. This time it’s Greenwood Avenue between 85th St and 105th St, which will be reduced from 4 lanes to 3, including a center turn lane.

Unlike other road diets, this one was requested by the neighborhood and has not received many complaints. The project is planned to be completed this year and will help make things safer for pedestrians by reducing the number of lanes of traffic to cross.

Bringing sidewalks to Greenwood

Our current mayor started his path into politics by helping to get sidewalks installed in his neighborhood of Greenwood. However, there are more sidewalks needed. Residents are working to have sidewalks installed in Greenwood and needs more volunteer support.

The “Greenwood Sidewalks” Neighborhood Matching Fund project is getting underway, and the group working on it needs more volunteers to make it happen. The project includes not just sidewalks, but drainage, planted buffers, etc.
