Pedestrian hit and killed on Aurora

A pedestrian was hit trying to cross Aurora Avenue N last night and has died today

A pedestrian was taken to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries Thursday night after being struck while crossing Aurora Avenue North, Seattle police said.

A man was trying to cross Aurora on foot around 8:12 p.m. Thursday in the 4400 block, police said. He made it across the northbound lanes, but was struck by a car in the southbound lanes

Aurora’s not a very pedestrian-friendly street, much less if you’re trying to cross. There are a few raised crosswalks, but not convenient enough for pedestrians. This unfortunate person made a bad judgment, but it’s poor road design judgment that creates these situations.

  • Geary Street in San Francisco is similar. It cuts through the city rather viciously. There was a recent incident in which an elderly person was hit and killed while trying to cross at an intersection that has a flying crosswalk. The crosswalk is rather difficult to use if you are at all mobility impaired. As such, the elderly person opted for a street-level crossing. It is sad to see human development that is so unfriendly to humans.
